Tornadoes are rapidly rotating funnels of air extending toward the ground. If a funnel cloud touches down on land, it can lift and move large, heavy objects and destroy buildings.
Tornado season is typically between March and August, although tornadoes can occur any time during the year. Approximately 1,200 tornadoes are spawned by thunderstorms each year.
Thunderstorms are heavy rainstorms that may be accompanied by strong winds, hail, lightning, or tornadoes. It’s important to be prepared for tornadoes and thunderstorms.
Check the news during stormy weather. If you’re outside during serious weather conditions, take cover. Or if you’re at home, get to a safe room.
